Te Tui Ora at Halls Road

23 January 2024

The naming of ‘Te Tui Ora’ was not merely a decision but a journey—a deep dive into the values and aspirations of our community. Held at Te Pou o Manako in Kerikeri, the workshop led by our Chairperson, Kipa Munro brought together diverse stakeholders to form a name that truly reflects the essence of our new development.

The Essence of Our Workshop: Our purpose was clear: to forge a name for the Halls Road Development that captures its unique identity and resonates with the community’s vision. The workshop drew participants from various fields including housing, urban development, finance, and environmental advocacy, ensuring a rich tapestry of insights.

A Reflective Naming Process: The session began with an introspective discussion on what the development meant to each attendee and what they hoped it would achieve. This brainstorming brought forward core values such as integrity, sustainability, and belonging. Through a meticulous process, we refined these ideas, focusing on the themes of hope, integrity, nature, prosperity, and belonging. These were not just words; they were the pillars upon which ‘Te Tui Ora’ would stand.

Delving into Te Reo Māori: The next crucial step was translating these concepts into te reo Māori, going beyond literal translation to embrace the cultural nuances and deeper meanings of each term. This translation was pivotal, as it imbued the name with the spirit and aspirations of the community.

Unveiling ‘Te Tui Ora’: The outcome of our collective efforts was ‘Te Tui Ora’, a name that symbolizes the weaving together of hope and integrity with nature, where prosperity rightly belongs. It’s a name that promises a development aligned with the values of wellness, unity, and sustainability, deeply connected to kaitiakitanga.

The workshop was a testament to the power of community and collaboration. ‘Te Tui Ora’ is more than a name—it’s a reflection of our shared vision for a future where our community thrives sustainably and inclusively. As we move forward, ‘Te Tui Ora’ will serve as a beacon of what we can achieve when we come together with a common purpose.
